Friday, July 20th 2012; the day that all Batman fans had been eagerly awaiting for months. Also the day that 24 year old James E. Holmes would turn the lives of many (people) upside down. The CNN.com article Gunman turns ‘Batman’ screening into real-life ‘horror film’ discusses one of myriad evil acts committed by human beings. Just before 12am on this summer night, a crowd of people piled into Theater 9 of the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado. What they expected to experience was the thrilling Christian Bale featured movie, “The Dark Knight Rises”. What these people did not expect however, was for a young man dressed in tactical protective gear to open fire, killing 12 of them and injuring 58 others. This incident has not only affected the people involved and the families of the victims, it has also affected people nationally and even internationally. Social change, being changes in the way society is organized and the beliefs and practices of the people who believe in it, definitely comes into play. Along with the obvious scarring of people’s lives, the sense of security in movie theatres that has been around for decades was shattered by the actions of this man who identified himself as ‘the Joker’. The movie theatre was a place of happiness to many people and now the innocence of these places has been violated in an extremely savage manner.
