Harriet Tubman. Who was she? Why was she so important to our history? What did she truly accomplish? Let’s see , Tubman, originally named Araminta Harriet Ross, had the misfortune to be born into a slave family. She also had the misfortune to be named after a character from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Born in Dorchester County, Maryland, Tubman had a troublesome and harsh childhood filled with a very difficult punishments that included having to be lashed, having to see her family members be sold and was once struck on the head with a two pound weight making her suffer from many severe seizures and sometimes entered in to very deep dream states which she claimed where religious experiences.

After reaching adulthood Harriet married a free black man named John Tubman ,but it wasn’t long before this bad A woman left her husband behind and headed straight towards the north where she could become free. Thats right, no more fancy dinners for John it’s all about that maruchan now. But ooooooooooh Harriet was not satisfied with just being free! She had a bigger more elaborate incentive. She wanted, she needed, she craved to see other slaves be free! So she continued her elaborate plan and began helping slaves escape from their owners and make it to the north. She only had one condition. Once the journey began there was no turning back for these slaves. She encouraged slaves to move forward and used the simplest and kindest ways to keep them going. She simply pointed a gun to their head. “ You feeling lucky today punk?” So Harriet helped lead many slave up to freedom, usually up to Canada, after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed which stated that any runaway slave in any part of the country could be captured and returned to their owners.
