As of December 2009, over 3.3 million American troops have been sent overseas into Iraq and Afghanistan alone; 793,000 of them have been deployed more than once. (Tan, 2009) Sadly, not all of our troops return home alive and many that do face many challenges ahead. Physical wounds surly do not go unnoticed. They are fairly common in war time situations and are even shown in war movies. What effects does one have with a TBI?
A person suffering from a TBI may have some of the following symptoms such as feeling tired most of the time, sad or anxious. Having trouble concentrating or remembering; and may also get frustrated or overwhelmed more easily. ("Make the connection,")
Depending on the degree of the injury, a TBI can be permanent. There are ways however to treat and cope with the effects of a TBI. Some methods include getting enough sleep, writing things down to help one remember, getting into a daily routine, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. ("Make the connection,")
One may ask how a person lives with a condition such as TBI. It all comes down to who the person is and how sever is their condition. TBI is ranged from a mild concussion to server frontal lobe damage. A small concussion that happens several times over can cause long term damage. Some of the signs of damage are the same signs as PTSD. A person can become depressed, frustrated and want to give up on life. That is why it depends on the person. Some have a drive to better their condition and some need a push. When it comes to how do they live with a condition, it’s all about the drive within that particular person. (Lin, 2012)
