A boy named Ben longs for the father he has never known. A girl named Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his mother's room, and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out alone on desperate quests to find what they are missing.

Rose's obsession with the actress is actually quite practical, since she (the actress) is Rose's mother. She was left by her mother because she is deaf, and her whole birth was a scandal. Rose can use sign language, but usually chooses to write her words. Her mother hires teachers for her, but she turns the page's of the books they give her into buildings. The buildings are actually small models of the buildings around her, in New York. So Rose sets off on a journey. She is found by her brother Walter, and lives with him. Ben, however, lives in Gunflint lake, Minnesota and was only born deaf in one ear. But when a terrible lightning accident leaves him completely deaf, he decides to go to New York and find his dad. It is important for him to find his dad because his mother is dead, and he never knew his dad. Turns out, his dad never knew about him, either. He thinks meeting his dad will explain the dreams, more like nightmares, that he has been having. In his dream, he is being chased by wolves. Meeting a new friend named Jamie leads him to meet Rose, figure out who his dad was and
