PHE 007 COACHING THEORY AND APPLICATION WINTER 2013 Instructor: Sandy Simpson E-mail: slsimpson@ucdavis.edu Office: 2263 Cowell Office Hours: Monday/Wedneday 10:30–Noon or by appointment Class Meets: Tuesdays 12:10—1:00 pm 1342 Storer Hall Course Description Coaching theory and effective methodologies will be introduced in this introductory course. The course will provide an overview of the broad span of responsibilities that make up the role of “coach.”. A lecture & discussion format will primarily be utilized throughout the course. In-class presentations will give students the opportunity to share their experiences and expertise with colleagues. Additional out-of-class observation assignments will be required. Course Objectives By the end of this course students will: (1) Learn to use the tools needed to develop and implement a coaching style and pedagogical philosophy. (2) Understand coaching in terms that go beyond performance statistics and competitive outcomes and deal with issues of communication, learning styles, and individual and team development. (3) Develop an awareness of how coaches impact the lives of their athletes beyond the sporting realm. (4) Learn what is needed to make informed choices about strategies, teaching styles, and motivational approaches that can positively impact your program.

Readings Assigned readings emphasize theory and application of coaching principles, Reading assignments will be provided and student discussion/input/reaction is required. You will be responsible for all reading assignments PRIOR TO the class listed in the syllabus.

GRADING Participation: (200 points) In class assignments will be given intermittently. They will correlate to the lecture topic that is being discussed on that particular day. Practice Observation Summary: 2-3 pages (150 points) You will be required to observe a team practice and provide a summary paper of your observations. This will be due on the last day of class, March 12th. Guidelines: 1) You may observe college, junior and senior high school, or youth league. No intramural sports, please. 2) The practice observed must be at least one-hour in length. 3) Include details of when and where your observations occurred. 4) Please include observations of: a) how well practice is planned in terms of efficient use of time, pace, and productivity b) your perception of how well drills/workouts are introduced and how groups are divided up c) (IMPORTANT) how do the coaches interact with the athletes? How is feedback given…verbally? Through physical demonstration? Is the feedback generally positive or negative? If negative, can you identify the event(s) that precipitated the negative reaction from the coaching staff? D) any other observations you care to make. In-Class Presentation: (100 points) Each student will be asked to present to the class a 5-7 minute presentation on a topic relating to coaching. I want to give you some freedom with this assignment, but will ask that you clear topic choices with me ahead of
