Autism

Disorders characterized that vary, from verbal and nonverbal communication to difficulties in social interaction and repetitive behaviors. A complex disorder of brain development which we have come to know as autism. Or, should I say ASD. As of May 2013 all Autism disorders were put together into one diagnosis Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). ASD can be associated health issues such as gastrointestinal disturbances and sleep. However, some people with ASD are known to excel in music, art, math, and visual skills.
In 1943 Leo Kanner discovered autism he labeled the disorder autistic disturbance of effective contact (Autisim Web n.d) Officially in 1980 autism was revealed in America through the publication of DSMIII(Tanguay, Robertson, Derrick 1980) there was no lack of confusion even after Kanner description, regarding the continuity of autism and other forms of psychosis like schizophrenia. (lippcott, Williams and Wilkins, 1980) He (Kanner) realized infants are normally interested in social environments and those who are autistic prefer nonsocial environments.
According to the Autism Society, “Autism occurs more frequently than expected for those who have other medical conditions”. As well as, woman who throughout pregnancy ingest harmful substances. In many families, there appears to be a pattern of autism. further supporting the theory that the disorder is genetic. Scientists also believe that the environment play an important part. With that being said there is no single known cause for autistic spectrum disorder.
Early signs of autism may appear during the first few months of life, infants who are autistic tend to stay away from people. They also become stiff when picked up or held. The growing process between autistic children and normal children are very different. For example, a child without autism will smile when their father enters the room. Typically before he or she has reached the age of one. While an autistic child would take much longer to show this type of behavior. The center for disease control and prevention have stated one in 500 children suffer from autism (and that is just in America).
