Persuasion, Manipulation, and Seduction Methods

In today’s society communication is key to anything and everything we do! Human communication is flamboyant and a tough manner that is full of effective approaches that include persuasion, manipulation as well as seduction. From persuasion to manipulation and seduction (a very short history of global communication), Aurel Codoban meaning of human communicating is, “influencing other minds through language” (Codoban, 2006, p. 152). Us, as people, should have a good understanding of how these specific methods and know the difference of each individuals, us humans can always improve and be more helpful for humans. As stated in the article, From persuasion to manipulation and seduction (a very short history of global communication). Codoban makes a very good option by saying “our mission to provide a critique of pure and practical communication so as to avoid the charming of our minds by our means of communication” (Codoban, 2006, p. 157). In this particular essay, I will explain the meanings of persuasion, manipulation, and seduction. I will also describe how each method work together and provide more examples by describing a few scenarios that are used to prosper these conclusions. In conclusion, I will provide modern-day instances of each method and identify the specific views they target.
Persuasion is one of the methods of communication that is used every day in our society. As stated in our text, persuasion is an instance in which there is a conscious intent to persuade on the part of the persuader; transmission of a message; the message receiver’s free will to respond in any way he or she wishes; an impact on the receiver’s attitude; and a successful alteration of the receiver’s behavior as intended by the persuader (Magee R, 2014). Persuasion is communicating moreover than words that encourage us or change individuals and can change the behavior in us as a individual as well. , Perspectives on Persuasion, Social Influence, and Compliance Gaining, Seiter & Gass emphasized how the receiver of communication in talking, writing or signals can perceives the message can decides whether influence or persuasion takes places (Seiter & Gass, 2004, p.92). In my option, persuasion is a person’s logical effort to change people’s attitudes, opinions, or choice. For instance, there are advertisements that have young people sitting around partying but then get pulled over by cops and arrested for drinking while driving which tells and persuades young people not to drink and drive, this is a good modern day example. As stated in the article, Seeing is Believing an Introduction to Visual Communication, Berger state that $245 billion was spent in advertising to persuade the American people in 2004 (Berger, p. 117). Another great example is presidential elections, you have to determine which president will serve the best while he/she is in term.
Within today’s society manipulation is another method we use and most individuals are unaware of it. As stated in the article, The Problem with Manipulation. American Philosophical Quarterly, “Manipulation always involves interference with freedom, at any rate beyond what is normal in personal interaction, or that the problem with manipulation is essentially a problem about unfreedom” (Greenspan, 2004, p.155). Manipulation, which is very diverse from persuasion, it concealments the meaning. Each individual is meant to hold in so much amount of information, which is performed automatically. There are many different stereotypes and other procedures of expectation and normalcy programmed into humans that make up an individual’s cultural programming (Codoban, 2006 p. 154).
