On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, intending to paralyze American Naval influences in the Pacific; which would have allowed them to continue their imperial drive through China. Casualties on the American side were devastating. The Japanese had sunk more than half of the American Naval fleet, and killed several people. A weary, depression stricken America, was brought out of Isolation, and thrust into World War. After the Victory against the fascists in Europe, America had finally turned its eyes towards the Pacific, where the Japanese were causing chaos throughout Eastern Asia. Although it is arguable that the use of the atom bomb on Japan was irrational, it ultimately saved the lives of many people. it ended the war with Japan, and prevented future wars from taking place.
Dropping the Atomic bomb had saved the lives of several people, including the Japanese. The Japanese had been brainwashed into thinking that if the Americans had come to Japan, they would have been tortured, and brutally murdered. So, every single Japanese citizen, was willing to fight to the death to “protect” their country. When the Japanese began to lose the war, the emperor recommended his people to kill themselves, in order to escape persecution. With this kind of resistance, a ground invasion of Japan was highly unlikely, because it would have resulted in mass casualties on both sides. Likewise, as the Japanese imperial military progressed through China, they constantly killed the people living there. The US could not sit back and watch our allies being murdered anymore.
By using the atomic bomb, the US had promptly ended the war with Japan. The US had warned the Japanese multiple times, telling them to acknowledge the Potsdam Declaration, which clearly outlined the process of a peaceful surrender. Likewise, the US had threatened Japan, saying that if they did not yield to the declaration, The alternative for them was “prompt and utter destruction”. Even after these threats, the Japanese did not even consider surrender. Left with no choice, the US had decided to use nuclear weapons, to bring the 6 year war to an end. Even after the first bomb drop in Hiroshima, Japan still didn’t back down. Only after the second bomb drop in Nagasaki, had the Japanese spirits broken, and the military had realized that if they didn’t surrender, Japan would cease to exist. In this way, the US had finally ended the war in the Pacific.
Finally, the use of the atomic bomb has ruled out the chance of any future wars from taking place. Since the United States had decided to possess and produce a nuclear weapon,
The Atom Bomb 2). The concept of an atomic bomb is not very difficult to understand. When unstable elements such as uranium-235 are bombarded with slow-moving neutrons, the uranium nucleus undergoes fission. Fission splits an atom's nucleus in two, forming two new elements, and releases additional neutrons as well as a considerable amount of energy. The discovery of fission was critical to the creation of the atom bomb. The atomic bomb was created through the idea of the Manhattan Project…
Ryan McCoy McCoy 1 Professor Pentecost Comp I 11 February 2015 Another Perspective on “Thank God for the Atom Bomb” Fussell ends quoting Harry Truman saying “Having found the bomb, we have used it. … We have used it to shorten the agony of young Americans.” Although I do believe this is a good way to think of it, I don't think it does it justice. Truman seemed like he regretted making that decision, as I think most people would in that situation... but he's not accounting for the future…
dropping of “Little boy”. It was a normal day in Hiroshima the air warnings had been signaled but then canceled. The condensation in the sky was the streak of an airplane then you would loud pop then a parachute and then a bright flash brighter than seven suns is what many that have survived the atomic blast have said. The atomic bomb was the first ever bomb that could hold such devastation and destructive power, this will be a journey of why we (America) dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima then following…
Atomic bomb August 6, 1945, after 44 months of brutal combat in the Pacific, a B-29 Bomber Plane, carried the most devastating weapon created by man to this date. Its goal was to end the war between Japan and the U.S. This bomb was a last resort to end this war, and President Truman found it necessary to use this weapon against Japan. Most people questioned Truman’s choice, they think that the bomb was too drastic and unnecessary, so, did President Truman make the right choice? And was it necessary…
starting to stir, going on with their normal routines. Little did they know that everything was about to change. At the assigned time of 8:15, the first nuclear war head to be used for combat was dropped on the city. There is a slow, faint whistle, and before anyone knows what happened, a bright, impenetrable goes across the the sky. The mushroom grows, and the chaos is just beginning. Was this necessary? Was there any other way to end the war, or were or officials looking after the well being of Americans…
States. The hydrogen bomb, a bomb that simulated the fusion of atoms in stars, was to be a ground breaking experiment that many scientist detested due to the immorality of its destructive power. Most scientist wanted nothing to do with this experiment; however, one scientist by the name of Edward Teller continued to work on the bomb in fear that the USSR would develop the technology first and have the upper hand in war. Teller was on the right path to making the bomb but the problem was that the mathematical…
distances in a matter of minutes, as well as allow people to travel at unheard of rates for the time. Technology has also allowed people to unite different cultures and people at a rapidly fast rate which would not have happened without it. Technology was and still is a major contributor to ending the physical and intellectual isolation of America. This paper will show how technologies such as railroad systems, telegraphs, harnessing of electricity internet and more have not only taken America out of…
Although many Americans thought the dropping of the bomb would be a good and peaceful resolve, they were not aware of how big of an impact the atomic bombs would make and the disaster the bomb would cause. By looking at a couple primary sources that I have found I will be explaining some of the problems of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Bombs. The sources that I have show a chronological order from the making of the bomb to the after math of the bomb being dropped. Almost all of my sources demonstrate…
ATOMS AND ELEMENTS Everything is made of atoms Everything is made of tiny lumps of matter called atoms; atoms are made up of even smaller particles. Structure of atoms Protons, electrons and neutrons Electrons are whizzing around the central nucleus. Each electron, and each proton in the nucleus, carries an electrical charge. Electrons carry a negative charge. Protons carry a positive charge. Neutrons have no charge as they are neutral. The electrons have a lot of energy and…
A) essay The First World War was worse than any other war in history. more characters in it were killed and hurt more than ever, the international conflicts of the United Nations. casualties of the entire war totaled over 20 million. Death came in brutal ways. The men mowed down by machine guns, destroyed by explosive grenades, killed in war and merchant ships torpedoed in the Atlantic, crushed under caterpillars fearsome new weapon that they were tanks. The war also collect parte in civilian…
