Visual Rhetorical Analysis: Into The Wild (Rough Draft)

The movie “Into The Wild” is a true story depicts the desperation of a young Emory graduate, Christopher Johnson McCandless, to flee from the invisible binding of societal pressure and family problems; and worked his way through the unusual journey to Alaskan. The story began with his college graduation and inner frustration to his broken family, then proceeds through a series of events full with mix feelings of joy, loneliness, and lost; in the end he died of starvation in the derelict bus with sorrow and hopeless in Alaskan wilderness in September 1992. From here, it shows that Chris are not totally isolated himself from the society but rather just trying to escape from his constant family issues which created huge impact and disappointment on him. Then Sean Penn wisely using the dramatic devices such as increasing tempo, volume and excitement on facial expression to bring the interaction scene of both characters to climax, for example the scene when Chris teased Ron for being stubborn and having a lonely routine life in his own house and work place. Ron seems to be challenged and wished to show Chris that he was not the weak and boring old man. The climax was reached when Ron finally decided to climb to the top of the hill. This is complete changes of his perception compared to the previous him. It clearly shows the acceptance of ideas and thoughts of another person and begins to adapt to new way of living.

After that, the camera came to focus the sincere conversation which involved pour out of true feelings between both characters about their own philosophy of living. Chris managed to touch Ron’s heart and implemented his ideology to Ron. It marks the success of exchanging the knowledge. Then, the monologue techniques is utilized on Ron’s sharing when he wanted Chris to learn to forgive and love as only by loving others he will be flee from the hurt and be happier. Although Chris ended up laughing at the conversation, he seemed to get the message and willing to listen to the advice. This can be substantiated
