Physiographic province-A landform region, an area delineated according to similar terrain that has been shaped by a common geologic history.
Appalachian plateau-Coal mining
Valley and ridge-Shenandoah Valley
Blue ridge-Old, rounded mountains, Mount Rodgers
Piedmont-“land at the foot of the mountains”, rolling hills, west of fall line
Coastal Plain-(Tidewater), flat land, east of fall line, many waterways
Hydroelectric power-Electrical power which is generated through the energy of falling water.
Fossil fuel-Fuels formed by natural processes of buried dead organisms.
Fall line-A line connecting the waterfalls of nearly parallel rivers that marks a drop in land level.
Natural gas-Natural gas is a naturally occurring gas mixture consisting primarily of methane.
Recycle-Recycling involves the separation and collection of materials for processing and remanufacturing into new products, and the use of the products to complete the cycle.
Frost wedging-Frost wedging, also known as weathering, is the process of decomposition of the Earth, including its rocks, by the expansion of freezing water.
Upward expansion-The downward pressure is reduced, and the rock expands primarily in an upward direction.
Carbonic acid-Carbon dioxide that has been absorbed into water.
Surface area-The measure of how much exposed area a solid object has, expressed in square units.
Parent rock-The original rock from which something else was formed.
B horizon-Subsoil
Transported soil-The weathered pieces of rocks that have been carried by several agents like wind and water and finally breaks down into further small pieces to settle down.
Residual soil- Soil that remains at the place of formation.
Tropical soil-Rainforest soil that is poor in nutrients.
Renewable resources-Resources that renew themselves like animals. They give birth to a new animal, then it keeps on going so animals are always going to be here.
Nonrenewable resources-Resources that cant renew themselves and might run out.
Solar energy-The radiant energy produced by the Sun
Geothermal energy-Thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth
Coal-A combustible black or dark brown rock consisting mainly of carbonized plant matter, found mainly in underground deposits and widely.
Petroleum-Petroleum is an oil that is found underground.
Nuclear power-The use of sustained nuclear fission to generate heat and electricity.
Mineral resource- The natural resources which cannot be renewed.
Chemical weathering-Process by which the internal structure of a mineral is altered by the addition or removal of elements.
Mechanical weathering-Physical disintegration of a rock
