National Security Cutter The first national security cutter was the USCGC Bertholf, which has been in service ever since August 2008. There are a total of eight national security cutters which include the USCGC Bertholf, Waesche, Stratton, Hamilton, James, Munro, Kimball, and
Midgett. The national security cutters are 127.4 meters long, have a beam of 16.4 meters, and a draft of 6.8 meters. The total load displacement is 4,400 tons! Additionally the boat can accommodate to a crew of 110 people. The boat also has a flared hull for increased stability. The armament on the national security cutter is an MK110 57mm gun. The
MK110 can fire at a rate of 220 rounds per minute and can fire within a 9 mile range.
The national security cutter is also equipped with impressive radars such as the X&S band surface search radar, EADS 3D air search radar, SPQ9B fire control radar and
Mk46 electrooptical / infrared sensor. The NSC is equipped with a 50ft x 80ft flight deck can support the operations of a range of manned and unmanned rotary wing aircraft.
The NSC propulsion system is powered by a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system integrating a GE LM2500 gas turbine and two MTU 20V1163 diesel
engines.
