Asia has several resources that the United States and Europe could use.

With Asia’s large population they would increase the export of products by the United States and Europe.

The desire for gold influenced European decision making during the Scramble for Africa by gold producing areas more sought after. The countries that could not claim the interior gold producing regions made sure they got the exterior port regions.

International trade improved the lives of both Americans and Europeans by increasing the availability of new products and also increasing the levels of goods and services. Wealth blossomed in both countries because they had better opportunities to import and export goods. Gold, diamonds, fruits, ivory brought riches to both countries.

Economic motives included the desire to make money, to expand and control foreign trade, to create new markets for products, to acquire raw materials and cheap labor, to compete for investments and resources, and to export industrial technology and transportation methods. The political motives were based on a nation's desire to gain power, to compete with other European countries, to expand territory, to exercise military force, to gain prestige by winning colonies, and to boost national pride and security. Exploratory motives were based on the desire to explore "unknown" or uncharted territory, to conduct scientific research, to conduct medical searches
