Chad Pt.4
Chad joined the World Bank in 1963. Since they have been apart of it, the World Bank has provided aid and support to over 50 development projects. Also, the World Bank has been working with Chad in order to reduce poverty and move the country towards economic growth. In 2006, the World Bank approved over 1.2 billion dollars of loan for Chad. The money given has gone to a variety of key factors in developing Chad. 40 percent of the money was for social sectors, 45 percent was for transportation and energy expenses, and lastly, 15 percent was for agriculture and local development (WorldBank, n.d).
Along with the World Bank, the European Union, the African Development Bank and the French Development Agency have come together in order to give 680 million to Chad to improve their transport facilities. The World is Bank is also aware of the education sector. The plan is by 2015 they will have put 400 classrooms that are fully built and equipped with proper learning materials. Over two million schoolbooks will be given out to the schools in Chad. Close to twelve thousand teachers from the community will be trained and assigned to the schools. Though the project is not finished yet, from the things that have already been done they have seen significant results. The number of women who attend school as increased and the there has also been a 10 percent increase in the number of students attending school (WorldBank, n.d).
Health has also been an issue in Chad for many years. However, once again the World Bank has stepped in to create change. In 2007, over twenty thousand people were checked for HIV/aids. Which was a 38 percent increase from the previous year. 22 percent of people tested were HIV positive, as a result, almost half of the citizens who were HIV positive were sent away be treated at other facilities. Over four thousand were had cases of STI’s and were all treated (WorldBank, n.d).
The United States of America also supports Chad in many different ways. Recently the United States has supported Chad’s military. They have attempted to make Chad military more professional, in an attempt to bring Chad more stability and security within the country. Also, the United States has helped improve maternal health of Chad’s women by providing aid and technology (State.gov,n.d). The economic assistance is helping Chad in tremendous ways. Chad’s GNI per capita has been on the rise since 2003. In 2003 their GNI was 220 dollars however, in 2011 it almost tripled getting as high as 720 dollars in 2011. 720 dollars may not seem like a lot but Chad GNI is higher than the average low-income countries. Also, Chad’s life expectancy has increase by two years, going from 48 to 50. New roads are being built in Chad. Which is going to help solve many problems that exist in Chad (WorldBank, n.d). Money, trade, investments are relevant to contemporary politics. Other countries and organizations are helping developing countries because they are gaining something from it. The United States is helping Chad military become stronger; as a result Chad will become an ally of ours. With Chad being an ally the United States would now be able to gain access to another part of the country they didn’t previously have. It may include building a base in Chad or maybe even having a nuclear weapon set up there that could fire at a bordering country that may become a threat. Other countries may give Chad in hoping that once they are an established country they could do trades or anything else. As a result, they loan to Chad but they know that they will benefit from it in the long run. The United States is also helping Chad government become a true democracy. They are teaching the military
