Unit II, Class 1, Part 2

Procedure:
1. Assemble your required materials tennis ball stopwatch lab partner
2. Drop the tennis ball for about ten times on both railing heights
3. Derive a method to solve for time using the following equation:

4. Height is analogous to the difference between y and y0. Furthermore, the initial velocity quantity is zero since the ball was dropped from rest, so the final equation to solve for the balcony’s heights is:

Questions:
1. I used the following equation: I used this equation because it had all the one variable I was able to measure (time) and it was very easy to solve the equation for height (y-y0), which was the variable that I wanted, once I set the initial velocity to zero
2. The sources of random error could come from atmospheric disturbances during our ball drop.
3. The sources of systematic error are from improperly timing the ball drop, due to a lack of perfect eye hand coordination. As well, the ball could have encountered a decent amount of air resistance on its fall down. We worked to reduce these by taking ten time trials of the ball drop, and using the mean of our trials
