Edward Young stated that all individuals were born unique. I agree with him. Every child born is different - different race, culture, medical conditions and countries and born to parents from all walks of life. However, not many of them stand out from the crowd. Not many of them become someone extraordinary.
Individuals are often restricted by the pathway of the education system in their countries. For example, in Singapore, students had to follow a standard pathway of attending primary school, secondary school and junior college before attending tertiary education. In secondary schools and junior colleges the choices were limited. They had only the option of taking limited science, arts or commence subjects. In the universities, there were limited courses with less flexible subject selections. With limited choice and exposure, they were not able to be different and try out different things.
Due to globalisation, many countries are introducing new courses into their education system. In Singapore, great efforts have been taken to introduce schools like La Salle where students have the option of taking courses that interest them. However, even when there is a wider range of courses offered, some parents tend to encourage their children to take up courses such as medicine and law which are considered prestigious. Regardless of their interest, their children may be compelled to take up courses their parents choose for them. They are not given an opportunity to venture into different courses and try out different things although there were options available to them.
Media plays a part in influencing individuals’ interest in selecting courses and careers. The radio, television and the internet
