Amoebic Dysentery Amoebic Dysentery is an infectious disease of the large intestine. This infection is difficult to treat with modern medicine, and if given it’s a repeated course of specific medication that’s needed. Amoebic Dysentery can affect anyone. However, the disease is mostly common to occur in young to middle aged adults. Amoebic Dysentery is caused by a type of germ called amoeba. Amoebas are tiny parasites that live in your intestines. If you’re infected, your stools will contain amoebas. The amoebas can then get into food and water and the infection can then pass on to other people. For example, if you go to the bathroom and don’t wash your hands, amoebas from your stool could get into any food you prepare or, sewage that isn’t treated properly could contaminate drinking water. Symptoms of Amoebic Dysentery are simple and easy to notice. Symptoms are characterized by non specific diarrhea with loose, semi formed; foul smelling stools, or dysentery with mucus, traces of blood and small quantities of stools passed repeatedly. It has many symptoms but the most common are diarrhea which may contain blood, stomach/abdominal cramps, and a fever. If you have any of these you should probably be worried and check with a doctor. In some cases the liver and other organs might get infected as well causing you to get hepatitis, cysts, abscess, etc. So if you ever come across these symptoms you should immediately see a doctor and prevent getting any other diseases. Now if you don’t ever want to get this disease pay attention. There’s really only three ways you can catch Amoebic Dysentery. One is drinking contaminated water. Two is eating contaminated raw veggies and fruits. And finally having unprotected oral-anal sexual contact. You’re most likely to get it if you live in crowded conditions or in close with other people, such as at an army barrack. If you have a weak immune system, like if you have chemo therapy or you have HIV. For those that are unfortunate and happen to be infected with this disease there is treatment. The treatment involves relieving symptoms, replacing blood, and correcting fluid and electrolyte losses. The given treatment would be antibiotics. Metronidazole
