Indonesia has a special habitat. It has many islands, and different seasons. Many habitats, and many different animals. Indonesia has helpful and harmful animals. Many places to find food and water.
There are five main islands in Indonesia, Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya. There are 13,670 islands in Indonesia. Indonesia contains more than 400 volcanoes. 70 volcanoes are active. There is at least 1 volcanic eruption a year. Indonesia experiences at least 3 tremors and earthquakes a day. Indonesia is located in Asia. The rainforest is 3 degrees S, 115 degrees E. Indonesia straddles the equator. 80% of the country’s territory is water.
Indonesia does not have all four seasons; they have a wet season and a dry season. The wet season is called the monsoon; it lasts from November to March. Most rain falls between December and January. Lowland areas average between 51 and 71 inches of rain. Mountainous regions get as much rain as 177 in. parts of Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan are completely flooded. The dry season lasts from June to October. During the dry season forests begin to turn brown and fires are common. The weather is hot and humid; humidity levels often rise to 100%. Along the coast the temperature stays around 80 degrees F. highlands range from 68 degrees F to 70 degrees F.
Indonesia has many different habitats. Most of Indonesia is covered in evergreen equatorial rainforests. There are mangrove swamps in eastern Sumatra, arid grassland in the Lesser Sunda Islands, and at higher altitudes there are alpine meadows. In the rainforest, dense growth limits visibility to about 50 meters. The Indonesian rainforest has over 40,000 species recorded to date. The Taeniophyllum is edible, and is used in medical preparations.
Indonesia is home to 12% of the world’s mammal species, 16% of the world’s amphibian and reptile species, and 17% of the world’s bird species. The mouse deer, Babi Rusa, geckos, mudskipper, and dwarf buffalos are some helpful animals. When the tide rises, mudskippers climb up trees and cling to branches. Mouse deer are nocturnal. They live near water in the undergrowth of dense forests. Mouse deer are edible. Some harmful animals are the leopard, blue panther, and Sumatran tiger.
Some edible fruit in Indonesia are bananas, Jambu Air, blimbing (starfruit), and mangosteen. The Jambu Air is very watery. It is a bell-shaped fruit. The Jambu Air is a thirst quencher.
Start with food that is familiar. The best places to forage are banks of streams and rivers. Whenever the sun penetrates the jungle there will be a mass of vegetation. Riverbanks may be the most accessible to find food. When weak, do not expend energy climbing a tree for food, there are more easily
