ENGL 112 Topic Selection Prewriting with Perspective Summary Week 5 This week’s goal is to begin collecting information and planning for the final Commentary essay by reading, thinking, and engaging with your topic. As you determine your topic, you’ll want to be sure it’s viable by understanding the perspectives within it and determining what unique angle you can offer to the conversation. Under each prompt or question below, provide detailed information that shares information about your topic. 1. What is your chosen topic, and how did you come across it? Why is it interesting to you? What do you personally hope to gain or accomplish by writing about this topic?
My chosen topic is teen pregnancy. Teen pregnancy is very common in Whether television influences teen pregnancies is going to one of the main issues. Also, answering the question as to whether others are getting pregnant because their friends are. 4. Define your audience. Who are they, and what are their needs, motivations, and influences? In what ways will you need to structure your writing to appeal to them? Analyze the groups and individuals who are reading and writing on your chosen topic. Work to define who they are and how their backgrounds will dictate your writing approach. My main audience is young women. I think young women should know about the tasks they will be taking on becoming a mom at a young age. I’m a young mother, although I still graduated high school and maintain a 3.8 GPA, it’s not as easy as it seems. Young mothers take on a lot on a day to day basis; being still a child yourself it will feel as though you’re taking care of two children. I believe young women need to know the reality of the situation and not just what they see on television. This will make them take a second thought about whether not they want to have sex so young. Most of the influences today come from the media. Mostly as young girls have someone that they look up to and want to be just like. Some celebrities are teen moms and make it seem so glamorous and easy. This makes young girls want to have babies just because their favorite actor or singer does. Then they will end up

on Writing Proposals The purpose of a proposal is not to simply argue a position on an issue, but through research and argument to clarify an issue and then offer realistic solutions to the issue. The ultimate goal is to partake in an ongoing conversation or debate about a topic, and in offering solutions, to think critically about the issue at hand as to what kind of solution will really work and why it will work.
