Positive Psychology Learning Journal Experience Positive Psychology The Happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts. ~~Marcus Aurelius ~~ •What is the meaning of the term positive psychology? “It is the scientific study of ordinary human strengths and virtues” (Compton, 2012). Really, what is positive psychology and how does this apply to positive thinking in the world we live in? It is important to know that there is no negative psychology that we have an area of study in, considering every day for some clinical patients there is a negative way of thinking and it is vital that a positive approach will outweigh the negative feelings that is upon us. This area of positive psychology is also a different attempt to introduce a new but classic concept of a more open-minded and a more appreciative perspective with regards to motivation, a more in depth capacity for understanding and most important, the need for human potential and a stronger, but more infinite wisdom and kindness. Here are three questions that are related to my own interests and curiosity that are from Week One in the Positive Psychology course that I took at Northcentral University. (Todal, 2014)
1. Can Positive Psychology be used during Cognitive Behavior Therapy sessions?
CBT combines cognitive and behavioral therapies and has strong empirical support for treating mood and anxiety disorders. “Knowledge about psychotherapy can be broken down into two broad domains – 1) knowledge of concepts and 2) knowledge of how to apply concepts” (Bond, 2002). This theory is very important on understanding the basic concepts of how important psychotherapy can be when one is orienting the patient who is seeking psychotherapy. Also, what is important is that CBT is or can be very structured depending on the goal setting agenda and the thoughts and feelings of the situation which has a specific goal-directed therapy session.
2. Can positive emotions trigger negative emotions when someone has PTSD?
There are positive considerations in knowing if a healthy personality and a positive mental well-being that could indicate positive healing emotions among someone who is considering healing through psychotherapy? When a woman has been through psychological abuse and has been possibly diagnosed with Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder that has been caused by battered women syndrome with examining the roles of shame and guilt in a social stigma setting can carry a legacy of stigma. (Pico-Alfonso, 2005)
3. Can compassion and empathy be taught to someone who primary goals have selfish drives and self centered motives can ever be positive in someone’s life? This question carries a lot of compassion and empathy, what triggers mental illness? How can these questions impact the stress in illness? The scope of the problem is to understand how one’s illness is affected in our society can our society and the world is often silent or invisible. Because the stigma is invisible it is impossible to be positive in someone’s life when the heart and mind is invisible to the outside world. Hedonic Happiness Hedonic Adaptation to Positive Events “Happy thou art not, for what thou hast not, still thou striv’st to get, and what thou hast, forget’st.” – William Shakespeare (1564/1616)
