GENERAL SUMMARY
In To Kill A Mocking Bird, by Harper Lee the novel takes place in a small town in the south called Maycomb county during the great depression. Scout Finch lives with her brother Jem and her widowed father Atticus. Atticus is a lawyer. During the first part of this book Jem and Scout and friend Dill become fascinated with a man named Boo Radley who doesn’t leave his house. They act out what they believe goes on in the Radley house until Atticus tells them to see life through someone else’s shoes before making judgments. This will become a theme throughout the book. In the second part of the book a trail comes across Atticus that is controversial. He is asked to defend a black man in a rape accusation against a white woman. The clear evidence proves that the man accused of this crime is innocent and the man who did it was the woman’s father. But since everyone is racist in the south they cant see past the color of his skin and prove him to be guilty of the crime. This book was a great example of people realizing the difference between right and wrong and not judging a book by its cover.

CHARACTER ANALYSIS

Scout- scout finch is a very intelligent little girl. She learns how to read before everyone else in her class. She is very confident and is a tom boy and likes to fight with boys. She is raised to be a thoughtful and good person by her father and gets many qualities from him. Through out the novel she matures into a young girl by understanding she lives in a prejudiced world and learning right from wrong.

Atticus- he is a widowed father and a lawyer. He is well respected in the town of maycomb county. He is very sympathetic and understanding and preaches that to his children. He takes a very controversial case by defending a black man in a racist white community and wants to prove justice and look through the prospective of others.

Boo Radley- boo radley towards the beginning of the book is a mystery. He stays in the house and for that reason there are many rumors that jem scout and dill become interested in. he is a harmless person with a possible mental disability . He leaves things in a tree by his house for the children. And in the end of the book he saves Jem and Scouts life and becomes a big factor in the novel.

IMPORTANT QUOTES 1.) “ I never heard tell that its against the law for a citizen to do his utmost to prevent a crime from being committed, which is exactly what he did, but maybe you’ll say its my duty to tell the town all about it and not hush it up. Know what’d happen then? All the ladies in May comb including my wife be knocking on his door bringing angel food cakes. To my way of thinking, Mr. finch, taking the one man who s done you and this town a great service an dragging him with his shay ways into the limelight- the me that’s a sin. it’s a sin and I’m not about to have it on my head. If it was any other man it be different. But not this man Mr. finch. “ Page 369-370 This quote is saying that Boo Radley should not be put out into the lime light because he doesn’t need any more unnecessary attention. He killed Bob Ewell and deserved it because Bob Ewell made threats against Atticus and his kids and almost killed Jem and Scout.

2.) “ Over here we don’t believe in persecuting anybody. Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced. Prejudice. “ page 329. This comes from Scouts teacher. She is comparing the Holocaust and Maycomb county saying that in Maycomb county they are not prejudiced, but they are prejudiced and prove it by convicting Tom Robinson
