Jem was 12 years old by now, and had started to mature. Although he was moody and always hungry, he still found time to make sure Scout stayed out of his way. “It’s time you started bein’ a girl and acting right!” (Lee, 115) Jem was growing, therefore Atticus and Scout had to be very patient and disturb him as little as possible. Scout was fine with this because she was waiting for Dill to get home for the summer. Unfortunately, she received a letter from him saying that his mother got re-married so he could not come down for the summer. Scout became very depressed because not only was Dill not coming, but Atticus was leaving for two weeks, for an emergency session of the state legislature. While Atticus was gone Calpurnia was watching Jem and Scout, and she decide to take them to church with her. As soon as they arrived things did not go as planned. When they arrived to the other side of the dump a women named Lula approached them. She was very frustrated that Calpurnia brought white people to their church. “They got their church, we got our’n.” (Lee 119) Lula thought that since blacks could not go to church with whites, why were whites allowed to go to church with blacks. She wanted to give them a taste of their own medicine. Lula represents the voice of the blacks, who were too shy to speak up. Calpurnia, and other people from the church told the children to ignore her, they were happy to have Finch family members with them.
