In my opinion, the theme Harper Lee is attempting to convey here is that mobs depend on emotion to power them and not intellectual thought, humans on the other hand are more prone to using at least some thought before taking action. If a mob can be split into the people who consist of it, then the whole driving force of emotion the mob possessed as a group would be eradicated. Now, it has simply become an assembly of independent characters, each with their own sense of judgment, reason and what is fair and unjust. When separated, people are no doubt less capable of performing the tasks mobs do. Scout was able to breakdown the mob this way by personally addressing Mr. Cunningham regarding his family, children, and citizenship of the city of Maycomb. She was thus able to remind him of his individuality and weaken the mob’s fury by breaking one of its participants out of the emotional energy.
