Time: A Gift Rachel Breedlove GEN/200 March 31, 2014 Dr. Dabney Time: A Gift One major aspect of personal responsibility is time management. People think their situations are unique and will come up with all kinds of excuses to skirt around the responsibility of time. The truth is we all have the same amount of time in each and every day. One thing that is consistently fair in life is that we are given twenty-four hours in each and every day. Time management is an area that college students need to focus on to be successful, responsible, and productive. Although tomorrow always seems like a better time to work then today, we are given twenty-four hours in which we can work, sleep, play, and learn. We need to remember that we can never get a day back so do not waste the hours you are given, shape them into something beautiful and worthwhile. Each hour of each day is significant to us and we can use those hours to our advantage. We make choices about how we spend each day, each hour, and each minute our choices are reflected in our successes or our failures. Benjamin Franklin once said“Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.” He also stated “You may delay, but time will not.” (Franklin B.) (n.d.) George Harris from the Beatles was not fooled by time when he said, “It’s being here now that’s important. There is no past and there’s no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can’t relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don’t know if there is one.” (Harris, G.) (n.d.)Time is limitless, it is amoral, and it is something that just is. Time has no feelings, time has no cares; time is what you make it. To stay on track and be successful in your college career you must manage your time wisely. Keeping track of all of your assignments and the due dates will help limit procrastination. Establishing a routine has many advantages and will help to prevent wasting time. According to e – book Becoming a Master Student, (Ellis, 2011)“Set goals”. There are many ways to set goals, to start with you should list your priorities in order of most important to least important. If you are a college student your number one goal should be devoting time to studies and completing assignments, also allow time for your work schedule, and your family. To have goals that you will be willing to obtain you should express those goals as positive statements, you should be specific about your goals and set time frames to completion, you should always distinguish between short-term goals and long-term goals. When you set a goal make a plan, and follow through, you should always finish to make it count for something more than wasted time and energy. You never get credit for what you start, you get credit when you finish what you start. Time does not bend to our will, we cannot save it for later you cannot add what you do not use today to the next day. You should evaluate each moment and make a decision about what to do with that moment. Your choice may be to study, eat, sleep, or play with your children, whatever your decision is remember it is a choice to be productive or it is a choice to let that moment slip by and be a moment of regret. Abraham Lincoln made a statements that had a profound impact that statement was “You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” (Lincoln, A.)(n.d.) The famous Charles Dickens and David Copperfield both said, “My advice is never do tomorrow what you can do today, procrastination is the thief of time. Collar him!” (Dickens, C., Copperfield, D)(n.d.). Time management is a personal responsibility, meaning it is up to you what you choose to do with your time, and you will choose to either be responsible or lazy; you either do what you want or you do what is needed. When a student procrastinates they try to cram in last minute assignments this becomes a habit of laziness. When
