The townsmen, “believing Pearl to be demon child”, do not trust that Hester would be a proper guardian for Pearl and thus should not be in her care (Hawthorne 83). While on the trip they run into a group of little kids who spoke with each other saying “Come, therefore, and let us fling mud at them!”(Hawthorne 85). Pearl quickly run at them and scare them off. The two travelers arrive at the governor’s house without incident shortly after and learn the council has decided to let her have Pearl due to Dimmesdale’s Persuasion. | In Foster’s book he says “The real reason for a quest is always self-knowledge” and that there are always 5 things that a quest contains: “(a)a quester, (b) a place to go, (c) a stated reason to go there, (d) challenges and trials en route, (e) a real reason to go there” (Foster 3). In the quest mentioned in paragraph 1 it fills all of the requirements of a quest. Hester is the quester on the journey while the governor’s house is the place to go.
