The Sydney Opera House is situated on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour. While still connected to land, it is mainly surrounded by water. Its location provides powerful characteristics to the building. The building consists of two bodies of big buildings, each possessing four sails. The building resembles the ocean and the sea. Its roofs bring an image of a ship’s sails in the ocean ready to depart into the ocean. With the roofs’ enormous scale and strong resemblance of a ship, the audience can strongly connect with the surroundings. When looking out into the horizon on the Sydney Opera House, one may feel as if he or she is on a ship sailing away. He could see the endless body of water, feel the wind passing behind his ears, smell the saltiness of the ocean, hear the melodies of the waves, see the endless body of water, and feel the unique humidity of the ocean. The Sydney Opera House’s location and structure together bring the experience of being on a cruise or a ship sailing off into the ocean. Another advantage the building obtains by its location is its broad spectrum of usage of lighting. During day time, its white surfaces reflect light in a way they resemble shells and/or sails of a ship. At night, various types of light shows can be shown on the roofs. Not only are the unique designs on the shells gorgeous, the light reflections on the water surface are simply mind-blowing. The usage of light brings another level of beauty to the Sydney Opera House. For example, a simple sunset would shine on the building and create a beautiful image with either its shades or its color. As one can now see, the Sydney Opera House’s location provides numerous more aspects of beauty with light, resemblance, and experience one attains by being at the site.
