There Will Come Soft Rains: A Futuristic Warning Of Nuclear War
It is a fact that since long time ago nuclear weapons have been used to create war. In the story “There Will Come Soft Rains” By Ray Bradbury, the author shows difference situations to describe our fate as a human race after using devastating weapons. Through the story we can see how Bradbury use some specific points to explain and warn us how war will destroy all kind of species on earth, points like an “intelligent” house in California which sits alone after a massive bomb destroyed everything, or the battle between nature and technology, and notably he uses a poem written by Sara Teasdale which is the namesake of the short story, all of this to shows the destruction of war.
The Story begins at seven o’clock in Allendale, California on August 4th of 2026. Like an alarm, a voice informs that is time to take breakfast, “Seven-nine, breakfast time”. Everything in the house is automated and the kitchen begins to prepare the food. While the house keep doing its chores, suddenly is time to bed, the house asks to Mrs. McClellan about which poem she wants for that evening, but there is no answer. The house chose the mother’s favorite bedtime poem immediately, “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Sara Teasdale. In the poem, Teasdale makes reference to the human extinction at the hands of war when she says “Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind perished utterly;” (Teasdale).
