Howard Gardner is a Harvard Psychologist that suggest that everyone has different types of intelligences. Gardner suggest that individuals are not only scholastically intelligent but are intelligent in seven other ways, such as, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistics, musical, mathematical and kinesthetic. He believes that intelligence is more than a high IO score, that just because the score is high does not mean that the individual will be productive in other ways, such as communicating with others. The Theory of Multiple Intelligences is widely used in schools today.Gardners’ theory focuses on the individual and the way he or she learns, it focuses on the stongest intelligence and incorporates the weaker intelligence into the equation. He states that these seven intelligences are found in different parts of the brain. Gardner also states that these intelligences can function together as well as independently. It was believed that intelligence was inherited but Gardner says that any human can be taught to do anything or trained to do anything. This theory is very important because it informs us that we as a people learn differently and at different increments. While some say that Gardner’s’ Theory is based upon personal experiences, it is still used widely among educators today.
