Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages
I chose to express my opinion on Erikson's psychosocial theory. This theory seems to register with me and I believe that it is very relevant to the human lifespan. Erikson’s theory is based on the development of the human as the development throughout life from infancy to adulthood. In each phase of the psychosocial theory one will hopefully encounter and overcome new challenges which will help them later on in life. The positive completion of each stage is necessary in order to be successful in the next. Erikson believes that you need a little bit of both, such as, nature vs. nurture. One can favor the other as long as it is a positive effect. It can be damaging to the maturation and can make it more difficult to move on to the next stage if not completed correctly.
There are eight stages among the psychosocial theory where one is faced with two conflicting sides. They will compete against their sociocultural and biological forces. I find it fascinating that as an infant you are faced with the choices of trust and mistrust. A child will learn to trust a parent as their protector and it is important for them to receive both sides so that they don’t grow up being vulnerable and trusting everyone they see. With this stage the mother plays a very important role in the child’s life with things, such as, feeding and abandonment.
