Scarlet Letter Theme Revenge destroys both the victim and the seeker. This theme is one of many that I strongly agree with. There is no “winning” when it comes to revenge. What has happened is over and there is no equal in the world. Revenge is a selfish act, an act that shows that a person isn’t able to understand suffering. This person doesn’t want to be the only one suffering, he/she believes that spreading that hate will give them piece. Revenge doesn’t lead to piece; if you were to be pushed into a fire, would you pull the person in with you or get out yourself? Those who feel truly satisfied are those who release their anger, who turn their cheek. I can recall moments from my childhood where I had been picked on or bullied in some way. What the attacker wants is for a response, something to show the impact that he is having. I learned that the best response to these situations was to ignore them or pretend you don’t care. Overreacting only brings you down .As Douglas Horton once said, “While seeking revenge, dig two graves – one for yourself.”
