America has repeatedly been at war, from the Revolutionary period to Vietnam. As a result of these wars, American society has suffered periods of discrimination as well as periods of equity. Different groups of Americans have risen to a better place in the economy at different periods of times. Two in particular were both enslaved persons and women during World War I.
In the 1920's women's roles were soon starting to change. After World War I it was called the "Jazz Age", known for new music and dancing styles. It was also known as the "Golden Twenties" or "Roaring Twenties" and everyone seemed to have money. Both single and married women were earning higher- paying jobs. Women were much more than just staying home with their kids and doing housework. They become independent both financially and literally. Women also earned the right to vote in 1920 after the Nineteenth Amendment was adopted. They worked hard for the same or greater equality as men and while all this was going on they also brought out a new style known as the flapper. All this brought them much closer to their goal.
World War I was a transformative moment in African-American history. What began, as a seemingly distant European conflict soon became an event with revolutionary implications for the social, economic, and political future of black people. The war directly impacted all African Americans, male and female, northerner and southerner, soldier and civilian. Migration, military service, racial violence, and political protest combined to make the war years one of the most dynamic periods of the African-American experience. Black people contested the boundaries of American democracy, demanded their rights as American citizens, and asserted their very humanity in ways both subtle and dramatic.
