THE TWO BROTHERS
The narrator portrays the physical powerlessness of the snails in this stanza through a metaphor. The composer shows the viewer’s how the two brothers are torturing these helpless snails. “The made tattered lace of a snail”, the composer illustrates how the snails are being tortured and burned helplessly outlining the two brother’s physical dominance over these helpless snails.
In the following stanza, the composer illustrates how the snails are being tortured through the use of a simile. The composer gives the snails a human disease to allow us to sympathise with the way these innocent snails are being tortured. “Withered in salt like epilepsy.”, the composer portrays the snails being burnt in salt violently similar to epilepsy. Their skin begins to bubble and dry due to the acid occurring in the salt, this shows the snail’s powerlessness to the physical dominance and equipment of the Two Brothers.
