Playwright and star of “The Tallest Tree in the Forest" Daniel Beaty plays the role of Paul Robeson's life as a singer, actor, and AfrIcan American Activist. I feel like the plays intended audience was for colored people. To show them that we also have power. This play was more on the musical side. Performing Paul Robeson's signature songs like "Ol' Man River" and "Steal Away." Paul Robeson was a well known African American artist in the early 20th century. Because of his singing and acting skills, Robeson had become very popular and wealthy, but because of him being an activist and having a certain feeling about the US Government caused him to be blacklisted during the McCarthy era. I feel like the design elements were very effective to the play. They also complemented the play very well by having things playing behind him on the wall as he spoke. The set said alot about the environment of the play. Dark, and kind of gloomy. There was one specific time when Beaty was yelling, speaking about the hate he felt, and as he got louder and spoke more there was a blue lighting that got darker behind him. I feel like the blue light signified how he was feeling..down. The costumes helped me understand the elements of the play, addition to Beaty's great acting skills of being able to do the role of females as well as males. Helped me figure out who exactly was talking. Now with the sound. Music, images, and sound effects were used very well in the play. Playing happy joyfol music when he was happy, and sad music when he was sad. Projecting images behind him to go along with what he was saying, sometimes even putting infromation that was going on each year, and sound effects giving the play the finishing touch.
