The American Civil War, lasting from 1861 to 1865, occurred when slave-owning states left the union and established the Confederate States of America. This pitted the north against the south, and while slavery was one of the contested issues, others, such as taxes, also existed. Ultimately, the north was successful, but some 620,000 Americans died during the conflict.
