The Sun Also Rises Mystery Essay Ernest Hemmingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises is not considered to be a mystery. However, through his creative storytelling, Hemingway nimbly evokes an aura of uncertainty and mystique surrounding the relationship of Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. Their attraction to each other is palpable, yet without the ability to consummate her sexual desires, and the tragic war wound that rendered him impotent, Brett obstinately pursues a variety of other meaningless relationships. There appears to be a recurring internal conflict with Brett throughout the course of the novel. Incapable of dealing with Jake’s injury, she meanders from relationship to relationship searching for that same unequivocal love she
The reality of this hypothetical situation remains a mystery, but it does affirm his status as a dynamic character because it reveals how he has grown from witnessing the failed relationships of Brett, whereas she still clings to the notion that he was the right guy for her. Her failure to troubleshoot the cause of her failed relationships is emblematic to theme of the aimlessness of the “Lost Generation.” By not learning from her past relationships, she is doomed to continue meandering from relationship to relationship squandering her life. Jake’s illumination, however, has taught him the despondency of his situation, and will give him aim for the future in the midst of his “Lost” cohorts. What does remain a mystery, though, is how he will continue on in his relationship with Brett. Despite the new frame of mind Jake has, he has always put everything aside for her, even when it has contradicted his own ideals, such as when he introduced her to Romero, even though he, himself, did not want to “corrupt” him or the sport of bull-fighting, and knowing that their love affair would only hurt him. Everything in his life becomes secondary as soon as Brett needs help. So it is a wonder if he will ever stop loving her. In this aspect, Brett will move forward, but
