As Jefferson states, "The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." (Jefferson, 1801. (1)).
Guns issues are one of the most talked about topics in the United States. Some people want to ban them completely and others just want the issue to get better. Making gun laws stricter or banning guns will not make crime rates improve because people will just result to other weapons, but making stronger restrictions and adding limitations will help to lower crime rates. It is not the gun who pulls the trigger it is a person who has a choice whether to pull it or not. Gun violence is a serious problem in the United States, and we should enact the following gun restrictions to minimize this: Ban Semi-Automatic Weapons, limit number of bullets in a magazine, and lengthen the sentence of people involved in the crimes.
To begin with, the gun regulations in the United States should become stricter. Guns should be allowed to be privately own and allowed to be carried with a concealed weapons permit. In other countries they have stricter gun laws; some people cannot even own a gun. The gun control laws in the United States are very weak compared to other countries. For Example, in Japan people are not allowed to own a gun. In the United States people have the freedom to own guns but make improper decision with the guns. The results are that other countries have lower crime rates involving guns then the United States (New York Times, 2012). In Australia in 1996 a lone gunman referred to as the “pathetic social misfit” slaughtered 35 people with just spraying a crowd with bullets. The weeks following the massacre Australian government reformed gun laws banning assault weapons and shotguns, tightening the licensing and financing gun amnesty and buyback programs. John Howard, the prime minister said, “We do not want the American disease imported into Australia.” The Australian homicide rate dropped 59 percent from 1995- 2006 (New York Times, 2012).
Britain has some of the toughest gun laws and control in the world added on top of their strict rules. They have the toughest laws because 1996 in Dunblane, Scotland 16 students and their teacher was murdered; Britain banned almost all ownership of handguns and banned people from privately owning automatic weapons (New York Times, 2012). Mayor Michael Bloomberg has stated “We are the only industrialized country that has this problem. In the whole world, the only one.” referring to the United States’ gun issues (New York Times, 2012). There are two factors of gun violence, a violent situation and a person having access to a firearm. There is very hard evidence defending the Second Amendment domestically and US citizens abroad are subject to the laws of the foreign country where the second amendment does not apply. The problem around the world is with gun misuse for example murdering someone, not the daily use of guns such as hunting. The military or the government cannot protect people at all times from things such as animals, criminals, or foreign invaders. As a right as a good citizen a person has the right to own a gun to defend themselves, and it is not to be compromised unless the person does not have a permit. We never hear the stories of the crimes that are prevented by having a gun present. By the Constitution government cannot take guns completely away from good citizens because it would be unconstitutional. We have to deal with the consequences of mistakes and actions by the government (Amrhein, 2013).
