Romer decided that he would like to find out what is the relationship between the attendance to class and performance in class. The purpose of this inquiry is to determine whether students need to attend class to earn good grades, and should students be required to attend class. He uses different variables and studies to come with his results. Romer used a few concepts to develop his inquiry. One concept that he developed is that students are more interested in or more skilled in the area of study are more likely to come to class than those who are not (Romer p.6). Those students who chose to go to class because they are knowledgeable of the material or interested are most likely going because they are viewing class as an incentive. The people that are going know that they are receiving something that will better their knowledge; this is also known as self-interest. Another concept that Romer developed is the possibility that students do not attend class because the instruction is of low quality, or they could be doing something better with their time (Romer p.5). This concept is a perfect example of an opportunity cost, according to Dolan, is the cost of a good or service measured in terms of the forgone opportunity to pursue the best possible alternative activity with the same time of resources (Dolan p.5). Students feel like by going to class they are losing out on other things that they could be doing, such as working, sleeping or studying for another class. By students not showing up for class, it shows that they are gaining something more valuable to them than the time in class, and also shows that the incentives of showing up were not good enough for them. Both concepts show that students chase to come to class or not based on their personal gain.
