The characterizations of gender can vary greatly from culture to culture, whether that be American versus Middle Eastern, Hispanic versus Spanish, etc. However, I have had very limited experiences in different cultures since I have lived in the United States my entire life, only engaging in multicultural activities seldom. Surprisingly enough, the biggest “culture shock” I have experienced thus far in my life was moving from the northern part of the United States to the south; more specifically, I went from living in New Jersey my entire life to living in North Carolina full-time. Regardless of being in the same country, there are several significant cultural differences just because of location. I would not go as far as calling it as severe as moving from country to country, but that does not mean it did not take some getting used to! The one main cultural difference in gender I noticed in the south is the emphasis on the more traditional “housewife” role for the female in a home. Whereas in the north, a decent majority of females would work outside of the home, in the south, it seems more are confined to the space of their cozy household. Now, I am not going as far as to say all southern females are merely filling the stereotype of the female taking care of the house and nothing else, it just seems like a good amount, at least in North Carolina, are more dependent on their husbands or males in the family than in the north. Whether or not this correlates to the stereotype or is a case-by-case basis is in the eye of the beholder; it was just something that really stuck out to me when I moved down here.
