The Need for Security
In this report I will evaluate the need for security and control in the prison environment and I will say why it is important that one security and control measure doesn’t dominate within a prison.
There are many advantages and disadvantages as to why we need security in a prison. There are many different things that have to be considered for security. The 3 main types of security, dynamic, procedural and physical and then also all the different features like CCTV, lighting, and perimeter fencing. Also keeping control could be doing searches and having rules in place.
Advantages
One advantage is that having all the different types of security means that the staff will always have authority over the prisoners, this is vital as they have to be able to enforce discipline to the prisoners as they are in there because they have done something wrong. The staff can always have control as they can see what is going on everywhere with the CCTV cameras that are around a prison. Having this means that they can be one step ahead when it comes to them having to deal with a situation in the prison.
Another advantage about having control means that the staff can keep a record of what goes on around the prison with the prisoners. Being able to keep control in this way means that when it comes to assessing the prisoners they can have a record of the offences that have occurred within the prison and they can know who was involved and find the appropriate CCTV to be able to give more evidence.
The IEP scheme plays a big part in the control and sercuirty of the prison. Having this in place means that the prisoners have something they can earn for and this can help them want to behave in the prion. Having this in place can also make life in prison more enjoyable as they will get along with other prisoners and they will be able to have more time out of the cell to have fun in the recreational areas.
A big advantage of the dynamic security is that the staff can monitor the prisoners and they can assess of they are coping in prison life. This could be that they are behaving well and getting on with other prisoners. If the prisoner wasn’t coping then this could lead to them self-harming or suicide. Having this dynamic security in place means that they can monitor this and act when they need to before it gets to the point where the prisoners self-harms themselves.
Disadvantages
A disadvantage of security is that some prisoners can take advantage of the cameras and monitoring that is going on and act up. This could be that they act up for the camera to get attention or they don’t like the fact that
