Macbeth Review
Act I
1. From king Duncan’s opening lines, you can tell he is a very polite, generous, kind, and well-natured, but he doesn’t like betrayal.
2. The witches are making plans to meet Macbeth.
3. The significant changes that would occur if the play started with Scene 2 would be that we wouldn’t much about the witches and how they could control the weather. We also wouldn’t know about what the theme is for the play and more about the battle.
4. Macbeth killed Macdonwald by slicing him open and putting his head up to scare away the enemies’ soldiers.
5. The two generals that defeat Macdonwald, Cawdor, and King Sweno of Norway are Banquo and Macbeth who are greatly praised by the king.
6. Macbeth’s reward for this service is the title of The Thane of Cawdor, but the king had also stated that he will keep showering him with gifts.
7. The three things that are told to Macbeth and Banquo by the witches are the prophecies…
Macbeth
All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!
All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!
All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter!
Banquo
Lesser than Macbeth, and greater.
Not so happy, yet much happier.
Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none.
8. What are Banquo’s responses?
9. We learn that Macbeth is sort of excited that two of the witches predications are true now, so the last one will come true, but at the same he is scared that his thoughts of murdering the king will come true. His character shows that he wants to be king, but he doesn’t want to the king in order to get it.
10. The honour that Duncan confers upon Malcolm is the title of Prince of Cumberland, that indicated that he will succeed him for Scotland’s throne.
11. We learn that Lady Macbeth is excited too for becoming the wife of the king of Scotland. We find out that Lady Macbeth thinks that Macbeth does not have it in him to do the wrong thing to be the King of Scotland. She thinks he too soft and loyal, so she wants him to hurry, so she can twist his thinking in order to commit the crime into murdering king Duncan.
12. We can see that king Duncan is seen as God because of how they treat him. Lady Macbeth says how the honour is hers for hosting this party.
13. The changes that are evident in his character are that he doesn’t want to kill Duncan just because he wants to be king. He was giving reasons on why he shouldn’t kill Duncan and they are that Duncan is his king and he is his subject, he is the host of this party so it would look bad if he was killed in his house, and lastly that he is a good king and everyone loves him.
14. Lady Macbeth’s and Macbeth’s plan is that after king Duncan goes to bed tired from the day, she will make the guards so drunk they won’t know what happened, and then do whatever they want to Duncan, and blame is on the guards by using their daggers and smearing blood over them.
Act II
15. The appearance of the dagger in Macbeth’s speech is that it is pointing towards his mission and has drops of blood over its blade and handle.
16. Lady Macbeth would not kill Duncan because he looked too much like her father.
17A. Macbeth is completely broken , confused, and imagining and hearing things because he killed him.
17B. Macbeth refuses to go put back the daggers and wipe the blood on the guards.
18. Macbeth pretends to be grieving and quickly kills the guards.
19. Lady Macbeth’s faint was feigned because she faints directly after Macduff tells her about the murder of Duncan.
20. The audience would think Lady Macbeth is a good actress and that she is not that affected by the murder of Duncan such as Macbeth.
21. Malcolm and Donalbain flee because they are afraid that whoever has done this deed is going to come after them next, so Malcolm flees to England and Donalbain flees to Ireland.
22. The four terrible things that happened the night of Duncan’s death is the weather was stormy, windy, and full of thunderstorms, Duncan’s horses went wild, Macbeth
