Charles Dickens Charles John Huffam Dickens, famously known to us as Charles Dickens, is one of the most fascinating novelists of all times. Born in England, Charles grew up to love reading and writing stories. Charles Dickens will be remembered for his early life, novels, and family life. Charles John Huffam Dickens was born on February 7, 1812th, at Portsea, England, to John and Elizabeth Dickens. Charles was the second child of eight children. Because of financial difficulties, the family moved. At the age of twelve Charles worked with working-class men and boys in a factory. While his father was in debtor's prison, the rest of the family moved to live near the prison, leaving Charles to live alone. This experience of lonely hardship was the most significant event of his life. It colored his view of the world and would later be described in a number of his novels. By 1832 he had become a reporter for two London newspapers and, in the following year, Charles began to contribute a series of impressions and sketches to other newspapers and magazines. These scenes of London life were published in 1836 as Sketches by Boz, which was actually his first book. Over the years Charles began to write more novels that became not only popular in England, but in the United States as well. Novels such as Oliver Twist, Dombey and Son and The Christmas Carol.
