How The Last Song demonstrates themes and concepts covered in this class
“Few things in life both thrill and scare us more than intimacy with another person. We want to be close to another and to be loved but at the same time we sometimes fear coming close.” This is what happens in the movie “The Last Song”1. This movie is a movie about all types of love. Love between couples, love between family members, and even love between enemies. It’s about forgiving others and trusting people to become apart of your life. The main character in the movie played by Miley Cyrus is a stubborn teenage girl called Ronnie that is going through a hard time in her life. She is approaching adult hood but rebels to make smart choices in life that would benefit her in the future because of the divorcing of her parents. She and her little brother are sent of to spend the summer with her dad where she learns to let knew people in her life and learns that there’s nothing more important than being loved and loving others during the good times and the bad times. Throughout the whole movie you can also see that this movie really helps demonstrate concepts and themes read about in the religion textbook. It’s important to love your family, whether it’s your mom, dad, grandparents or siblings. Being a family means you are a part of something very wonderful. It means you will love and be loved for the rest of your life. As said in 1 Corinthians 13:8 “Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.”2 Love is something eternal. Love is an essential thing in life and some people lack love. Relating to the Last Song Ronnie resents being loved and loving her father because he hasn’t been a part of her life for the last 3 years. Soon after her father gets sick she really starts to realize that being loved and loving others is way more important than keeping a grudge over someone because of something stupid. She learns to love her father and lets him be a part of her life once again, because family love is the kind of love “ that sprouts naturally, and is often quite emotional, with deep attachments.”3 Throughout this whole movie you can see that theme 13 in the religion textbook helps demonstrate how important and essential family love really is.
