Public Opinion Survey Evaluation The public opinion survey in general reflects liberal views. This is concluded by the way questions were answered and the economic variability of the respondents. Additionally, gender percentages of respondents increase chances of gender biases in the survey results. It also appears the current presidents management of the country is reflected positively by greater than forty percent of the respondents. Initially, the survey appeared liberal related to response percentiles to questions such as, “Do you support the contention that illegal immigration should be a felony criminal offense?”, “Did you vote for Barack Obama in the last election?”, “and “Do you believe higher income individuals should pay a higher rate of taxes to help alleviate the national debt?”. These questions may appear more liberal at the surface; taking a deeper look, the questions were answered based on the respondents’ demographics. Conversely, the results of questions such as, “Do you support the right of same sex couples to marry?” and “Who do you blame for the national debt?” would indicate more conservative views. There doesn’t appear to be a clear ideology tone in the survey. In addition, the results of this survey are not accurate. First thing, for a place like Texas, a sample size of only sixty four is not sufficient to determine the view of the population of Texas. In addition the way some of the questions are asked and the lack of answer choices leads to inaccuracies. For example, question twenty one, twenty two, and twenty nine; question twenty one asks, “Do you think Iran and North Korea will soon have nuclear weapons?”, then in twenty two it asks, “Do you believe the U.S. should have a military response to the existence of such

nuclear weapons?” question twenty one imposed on the fear of U.S. citizen’s which possibly swayed the response in question twenty two. The same can be said for question twenty six, related to media influence on respondent emotions toward event of the Colorado movie theater shooting. Socialization as it relate to political issues is determined or impacted by individual response to questions usually based on acquired beliefs. Acquired beliefs come from demographic characteristics related to family, peers and chosen political leaders. Socialization affects in this survey is multifaceted, based on at least half of the respondents would be expected to have basic knowledge of most political issues being that they participate in a Political Science club. Views of at least fifty nine percent would be expected to be more liberal based on the question, “Did you vote for Barack Obama in the last election?” This suggests he is their chosen leader. Fifty eight percent of respondents were women and based on media coverage during the last election period regarding contraceptives and issues related to being raped and whether a woman should have the right to an abortion. The media would definitely affect the responses of this gender and possibly most males if family issues determined their response. Question sixteen and twenty four are geared towards women related issues and the media definitely affected the last election based on headlines and repeat sound bites on these topics. Additionally question nineteen regarding same sex marriage, the respondents answers may vary based on whether they themselves are in a same sex relationship or have a family member or friend who is, and they support their happiness. Some may still vote “yes” if it affects a loved one negatively, when they do not necessarily agree. In evaluation I found a few things surprising. However the most surprising thing in the survey was that more than half of respondents voted for Barack Obama.
