After reading chapters 1 and 2, I began to have a whole new perspective on teaching mathematics in the 21st century. Coming to the conclusion that students need mathematics to be successful in all academic areas. As a professional, you must be able to help the students learn how to think of themselves as mathematicians. "Since the 1960s, at regular intervals, the United States gathers data on how fourth, eighth, and twelfth-grade students are doing in mathematics on the NAEP. These data provide an important tool for policy makers and educators to measure the overall improvement of U.S. students over time in what is called the "Nation's Report Card." (Van de Walle, Karp, and Bay-Williams, 2016 p. 3) The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), use for different achievement levels. Throughout the years, a huge number of students fell below proficient levels of performance.
Throughout the years a lot of states adopted these standards and gave teachers a great understanding of what mathematics should be taught. To me, these standards have a positive and negative impact on students and their learning.
