The United States actions toward Mexico’s business with Texas on Mexico’s land was unjustified for the following reasons, they fought for Texas when it was Mexico’s land to begin with, the Americans did not respect Mexico’s way of running Texas, and lastly the Americans crossed Mexico’s territory to fight them and take their land. The United States in this situation was being greedy and wanted a bunch of land to themselves and only under their circumstances.
In 1821 a man Moses Austin got permission from Spain to begin a colony in Texas which was a part of Mexico at the time. “Mexico declared its independence from Spain… Mexican officials agreed to let Austin begin his colony…” (Heart 252). As long as people settled there
“consented to learn Spanish, become Mexican citizens and join the Catholic Church” (Heart
254). The Mexican culture to begin with is very traditional, so it would make sense that because it was their land they got to choose what would happen in that land and a couple of those conditions were to speak Spanish and join the catholic church so it would only be right if the rest of their land did also, it is Mexico’s land so following there conditions would be ideal. “By 1830 there were about 25,000 Americans living in Texas. As their numbers grew, tension between the
Mexican and American government began to rise” (Heart 252).
The Tension that grew between the two countries led to Texans not respecting Mexico’s wishes and did what they pleased. “Americans disliked having to take orders from Mexican officials” (Heart 252). “They resented having to having to deal with official documents in
Spanish, a language most of them were unwilling to learn” (Heart 252). Mexico was in the right
to do what they wanted in their land, and the Americans just didn’t want to respect that, so for
Mexico to be angry with the Americans would be justified, but to the Americans Mexico was just asking for way too much. When it came to slavery in 1829 Mexico ended slavery and
Texans who had slaves just simply “ignored that law” (Heart 252) and kept there slaves. What
Texans failed to understand and respect was that Texas was still apart of Mexico and they still have to follow the terms and conditions of Mexico. The Mexican culture is not only based on tradition but on respect and following rules. Texans did not seem to do that, and that was extremely disrespectful to now follow the laws especially if Mexico was letting them stay in their country.
Mexico’s way of putting things to the Texans was if you don’t like how we do things here then you are more than welcome to leave. Mexico felt very disrespected and Stephen Austin the son of Moses Austin went to Mexico to settle things down a bit but he got thrown in jail on the behalf of all his people won’t follow the laws of Mexico. Mexico needed to take back its country and doing so eventually led to war. The Mexican war was successful, “13day siege, the
Mexicans overran the Alamo and executed all of the defenders who had survived the assault”
(Heart 252). The American should have just done what they were told if they wanted to stay in
