SETTING: A therapist’s office (SR) and a hospital room (SL)
TIME: The present and past
SCENE: The stage is set up to where there is a therapist’s office at SR and a hospital room at SL. The lights come up on the THERAPIST and AIDEN in the therapist’s office.
THERAPIST
What seems to be the problem?
AIDEN
Well… It all started when I was just six years old. (Scene switches to the hospital room. AIDEN, as a kid, enters)
YOUNG AIDEN
Mommy!
(runs up to mother and hugs)
MOTHER
Hi honey! How was school?
YOUNG AIDEN
It was great! Mr. Brown let us do show and tell and I showed everybody this! (pulls out a hourglass from his pocket)
It’s an hourglass. Everybody loved it! We all just watched the sand go back and forth, it was so cool! I told everyone that it was magical, but Mr. Brown didn’t believe me.
MOTHER
Hey honey, could I see that? (YOUNG AIDEN hands her the hourglass)
Where did you get this?
YOUNG AIDEN
Grandpa gave it to me! He said he wanted me to have it.
MOTHER
Go ask grandpa for a dollar, I heard there is a vending machine in the hall. Could you ask grandma and grandpa to come in here while you’re at it, please?
YOUNG AIDEN
Ok mommy! (YOUNG AIDEN exits. Scene switches back to the therapist’s room.)
THERAPIST
Not to be rude, but I’m really not seeing the problem here. Please do recall that you’re paying me a hundred dollars an hour.
AIDEN
I too didn’t see the problem. I was as oblivious as oblivious could be, but then again I was only six years old.
THERAPIST
