The Great Gatsby Everyone has a dream or goal they want to achieve whether they put in the work to get there or not. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is an intriguing story that takes place in the 1920’s about Jay Gatsby being in love with Daisy Buchannan, but two things stand in the way, his lack of money and Daisy’s husband Tom Buchannan. The American dream is portrayed in this story by showing the lengths Gatsby went to trying to become wealthy. Fitzgerald uses main character Jay Gatsby to portray the American Dream. Gatsby was a poor boy from the Midwest who has been motivated since his childhood to become more sophisticated and better himself. This goal became even more necessary as he fell in love with Daisy Buchannan. He knew she wouldn’t want to date him if he didn’t have the money to support her. The mentality of most upper-class people was the same as that man at Gatsby’s party. He said, “Rich girls don’t marry poor boys.” Gatsby did achieve great wealth which was many people’s image of the American Dream, but he did not achieve his own dream. Gatsby’s dream was different than most, and he risked everything to try and reach it. Jay Gatsby’s goal was to get Daisy to fall for him again. This time he had the wealth he needed, but Tom Buchannan still stood in his way. Tom was able to get in Daisy’s head and make her realize he was a safer choice and could support her better. Tom made remarks about how Gatsby got his money like, “I found out what you ‘drug stores’ were.” In the end Gatsby never
