The Functions of Management at the Walt Disney World Resort
The five functions of management are planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling. In a company as large at the Walt Disney Company, these five functions are vitally important to have the success this company has had for close to a century. Within the Walt Disney Company is the Walt Disney Resort in Florida. The five functions of management can be seen throughout the Florida resort. From carrying out the plans and mission statement, organizing the plans and objectives, successful staffing of employees,
The Magic Kingdom has a more relaxed organic structure per section of the park. Even as a chef, I had the freedom to leave my work location to socialize with park guests outside of my restaurant. The only real rule to this was I needed to stay within the “land” I represent. Flexibility of “doing my own thing” once I had down time from regular job duties is well liked from higher up managers. Every cast member stays on first name basis with guests, fellow cast members and management alike. This decentralization allows cast members to leave their exact job location, when time allowed, to mingle with park guests in a relaxing atmosphere. The main job description goes back to Disney’s vision “to make people happy”.
Furthermore, Disney’s organization of typecasting of employees is an example of their staffing. Staffing is a “effective and efficient deployment of people”( Back, Reilly and Minnick, 2014) and as stated in the Michigan Chronicle "A company is only as good as its employees," said Jennifer Kluge, the executive vice president of the MBP (Michigan Chronicle, 2004). With strategic staffing through typecasting, Disney is able to give their guests the best possible magical experience.
