Loyalty
“A person is either with this court or he must be counted against it” * Judge Danforth * Cliché: you are either wit me or against me * The sense of importance that Danforth has over society and your either with him or against him, as he is the court. * The effect it has on the reader is that it communicates a scene of loyalty * Belonging and loyalty, are you loyal to the collective or are you loyal to yourself * Is it better to belong to the collective and belong and be unhappy or loyal to yourself and be comfortable with whom you are.

Reputation
“She is blackening my name in the village! She it telling lies about me! She is a cold, snivelling woman, and you bend to her!” – Abigail Williams * Repetition of “She”: the use of repetition of the personal pronoun “she” suggests a pre existing relationship between the two characters. It also holds an accusatory tone to Abigail’s passionate rant about john proctors wife Mary proctor with whom she is direct romantic competition. * “She” also adds a personal relationship * Abigail Williams’s reputation is important as ne needs to belong to society if her reputation is squandered by Mary proctors gossiping she will be thrown out of her community.

* Listing: the use of listing here shows the reader in just how many ways Abigail finds Mary and her actions to be cruel and unfair. * Phrases like “…she is a cold, snivelling, woman…”
