The book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and the movie Smoke signals are very similar despite the fact that there was written by the same person, Sherman Alexie. Even though these two stories are told in a different format, Alexie gives the same message. The message of the book and the movie is never give up, no matter how hard life gets. Junior went through a lot of difficult times, but he never gave up. For example, in the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior lives in this little reservation with a whole bunch of poor Indians and whites. Some nights, he didn’t have food to eat. Even had a whole chapter on why Junior liked chicken so much and how that’s the main thing there was to eat. On page 8, Junior tells us how his family would miss meals. “And sure, sometimes, my family misses a meal, and sleep is the only thing we have for dinner, but I know that, sooner or later, my parents will come bursting through the door with a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken”. Also at his school he would get picked on too, but all these difficult times didn’t stop Junior for escaping from poverty and wanting something better for himself. He even transferred schools because he wanted a better education, even though it would be even tougher at his new school. At his new school, it was even hard because he was now going to school with rich white kids. Junior went through a lot of difficult times, but he never gave up. As for the movie “Smoke Signal” the main character Victor, he also went through a lot of difficult times. Especially when his dad left he and his mom and he always thought he would come back and his friends use to make fun of him about that. When Victor got a little older in the movie, he never gave up on his dad coming back because he loved him so much. When he finally thinks his dad is coming back, he gets more bad news that he died. So throughout Victor’s whole life, he was going through a whole bunch of ups and downs, but he never gave up on his life or his family. Both of these two characters are so similar but placed in different difficult times and different types of hardships. But Junior and Victor both had so
