Crime fiction is the genre of fiction that deals with crimes, their detection, criminals and their motives. The film “The Bone Collector” complies with the conventions of crime fiction genre as it follows a ‘whodunit’ structure. There are many features such as characterisation, false herrings and clues that support the overall plot. Lincoln Rhyme is portrayed as a morally upright, intelligent and isolated protagonist who can decipher evidence. This is shown throughout his daily life and whenever he solves a crime.
He fears becoming a human ‘vegetable’ and he is willing to die out of his comfort to release all his stress and pressure. Rhyme is a hard boiled smart alec whenever someone approaches him and this highly reflects on his personality. A crime has been committed which in the film is murder with other crimes being committed either as a result of or as the cause of the murder. The crime has been committed to 7 people throughout the film. Amelia and Rhyme were forced to make ethical decisions in order to prevent the crime from happening again. A villain Marcus Andrews was an ex­forensic cop whom Rhyme’s testimony helped convict of planting false evidence at crime scenes. Marcus

Many clues such as the puzzles, maps and photos which Rhyme put together were used to symbolise the location of murders and where the crime would lead to. False herrings such as Howey being an arrogant man led the viewer to think that he would be the final killer. Danger and conflict is always in favor of Rhyme as he has been in an accident which caused him to become paralysed unable to explore the crime himself. Thus Amelia is used to support him in his detective career. Amelia is also faced with danger and conflict as she gets traumatised when entering the slaughterhouse especially when gender is mentioned.

The Man of the Twisted Lip and The Bone Collector are different in many ways even though they comply the conventions of crime fiction genre. Sherlock Holmes is portrayed as a brilliant and intelligent man along
